| Visitor's Information 10 Things About Nans Sous Ste. Anne 1. The name Nans Sous Ste. Anne means valley under Ste. Anne. The word Nans is Celtic in origin (the Celts and later the Romans had a big presence in our area). Ste.Anne refers to the fortified Chateau of Ste. Anne that once stood on the cliffs above Nans. Built in the 12th century, if was destroyed by Louis XIV in the 17th century as were most chateaux of military or strategic significance in this region during the fight to unite the Franche-Comte with France. 2. Elevation - 300-600 meters 3. Climate - four definite seasons -The temperature is mild most of the time as Nans is protected in summer and winter by her surrounding cliffs. There is often snow in winter, spring comes late around the first of May, summer has long, glorious sunny days, cool nights and occasional thunderstorms, and fall which is often very colorful, usually lasts a long time, from around the first week of September until the first hard freeze, usually in late November. 4.
