10 Things About Nans Sous Ste. Anne

1.
The name  Nans Sous Ste. Anne means valley under Ste. Anne.  The word Nans is Celtic
in origin (the Celts and later the Romans had a big presence in our area).  Ste.Anne refers to
the fortified Chateau of Ste. Anne that once stood on the cliffs above Nans.  Built in the
12th century, if was destroyed by Louis XIV  in the 17th century as were most chateaux of
military or strategic significance in this region during the fight to unite the Franche-Comte
with France.

2.  Elevation  - 300-600 meters

3.  Climate - four definite seasons -The temperature is mild most of the time as Nans is
protected in summer and winter by her surrounding cliffs.  There is often snow in winter,
spring comes late around the first of May, summer has long, glorious sunny days, cool nights
and occasional thunderstorms, and fall which is often very colorful, usually lasts a long time,
from around the first week of September until the first hard freeze, usually in late
November.

4.  Population - 150

5.  The author of "La Guerre Des Boutons", Louis Pergaud, was born here.

6.  The cows still stop traffic as they walk through town going out to pasture.

7.  There is very little commerce in Nans --the small Hotel de la Poste, a store for basics, and
the Fromagerie, where one can watch Comte cheese being made from the milk of local cows.
Fortunately, the closest restaurant is only 2 miles away, all services are  available at 10 miles
in Salins Les Bains (a very scenic drive), and the bread truck comes through town every
morning at about 9:30.  We are very fortunate, however, to have the Gite d' Etape here
where one can rent equipment for going into the caves,to do the Via Farrata (guided
rockclimbing) and other outdoor pursuits.

8.  The Taillanderie -A 19th century factory, now a national museum, where until 1969
high quality cutting tools, especially scythes, were made.  The power was provided by
massive oak water wheels.  It is maintained in working order and open to the public
.

9.
people tell us,"it's magical - a time-out-of-time kind of  place".

10..  And, the Source du Lison, which "The Eyewitness Guide to France" calls, ----"Nature
at it's purest".
